I’m looking forward to a down weekend after an especially full week! What I’ve come to realize is if I start to feel irritated and impatient, it means my self-care has either slipped or needs to be upped! In this case, the latter 🙂 When we’re extra busy we need to schedule in more time to ourselves than usual. I allowed myself to go for a run the other morning by the beach instead of diving into a full workday, which made all of the difference energy wise. I stopped feeling resentful and ended up having a renewed energy that was brought forth to my day that I wouldn’t have had other wise. I was more productive, even though I took time out to do it.

When we’re building and growing our businesses regardless of what level we’re at, there has to be a sense of urgency. It’s this sense of urgency that propels us forward and keeps us going. It’s also different depending on the level we’re at in our businesses. In today’s article, I share why that sense of urgency is so important to your business growth, and how to create it at the different stages of business.

Having a sense of urgency is important in the growth of your business, because it forces you to get out of your comfort zone and do what you need to do to actually grow it.

Being complacent creates more complacency.

I always say being in business for yourself is the best personal development course you can ever take, because you are focused to deal with your own blocks preventing you from being successful.

Being in business = sales, and sales brings up all kinds of blocks.

BUT if you have a sense of urgency you will force yourself to address those blocks, and keep going instead of letting them stop you.

For the person new to business, the sense of urgency is usually financial. You’ve either discontinued your career to give this a go, and have a lot riding on it. You need to provide for yourself and maybe a family too. OR maybe you’ve just finished school and this is your first “job” and you need to make it happen in order to survive. Thus a financial urgency is created. You are willing to do whatever it takes to make your business a success.

Then there is the business owner who is past this stage, and is financially secure or maybe doesn’t need to contribute financially to the household. With both cases, there is not that same financial pressure. This is typically where I see business owners “take their foot off the gas”. They start to coast, lets sales slide, and become lackadaisical. This is fine until it’s not. They end up hitting a slow period or slump, aren’t prepared, and therefore create a financial sense of urgency all over again.

So how do you create a sense of urgency when you don’t have the financial pressure?

This is the type of urgency that is my favourite – it’s anxiety free unlike like financial pressure. This is where you can focus on something much bigger than yourself and surviving. You get to expand your why to impacting and helping others. Of course that part of your “why” was there before, but let’s be honest. If you’re struggling financially, it’s hard to focus on this. When you can focus on this bigger picture, it becomes super inspiring. You’re so fired up about how you can help more people and have a bigger impact, that this is what drives you every day. That’s what has you moving through your own blocks and being the best version of you. You have inspired ideas that you are so excited to bring to fruition. You are creating at the highest level. From a place of love and expansion – that’s “we” centered and not “me” centered.

This “why’ will be different for everyone and it’s not about the “size” of the why or comparing yourself to others. It’s about what is inspiring to you. It’s an idea the universe has given to you, and you will know it’s right for you because you are excited and motivated to carry it out. That is what will get you moving in the morning 🙂 Tune into those ideas that have been percolating, and take that next step in bringing it (them) to fruition. Be brave and courageous! You can do it.

And if all else fails in creating a sense of urgency, you can invest in something big (i.e. hire a coach, strategist, more employees), that forces you into that financial sense of urgency again. It’s so big and scary, that you’re forced to look at all of the stuff inside you holding you back because you have to 😉
